Personnel: Doug Sahm; David "Fathead" Newman , Dr. John, Augie Meyers, Bob Dylan. The first of two albums that Doug Sahm recorded for Atlantic records without his beloved Sir Douglas Quintet, 1973's AND BAND is notable not only for its irresistible mix of blues, country, Texas Swing, and rock, but also for the members of the titular band. On board for the sessions were, among others, Dave Bromberg, Dr. John, soon-to-be long-time associate Flaco Jimenez, the Quintet's Augie Meyers, and the song and dance man himself, Bob Dylan. The vibe is amiable and relaxed, yet spirited throughout as the band works its way through standards ("Poison Love;" "(Is Anybody Going To) San Antone"), covers (Willie Nelson's "Me and Paul"), and other assorted rockers and rollers (Dylan's "Wallflower" is a particular standout). AND BAND doesn't groove with quite the same urgency as early Quintet material, but that's precisely its appeal. This is the kind of music that gets made when the crowds go home, the bars close, and the band kicks back for a real cool time. Music really doesn't get much more enjoyable than this.
