The original Peter Green–fronted lineup of Fleetwood Mac stands alongside the likes of The Yardbirds and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers as one of the most trenchant bands of the mid-'60s British blues boom, and they kicked off with a bang. Not only was their 1968 debut album a big hit in the U.K., it was proof that a bunch of Brits barely into their twenties could credibly cover classic bluesmen like Elmore James ("Shake Your Moneymaker") and Howlin' Wolf ("How Many More Years"). But Fleetwood Mac didn't just leave the blues tradition where they found it—from the first, they edged it onward. Singer/guitarists Green and Jeremy Spencer penned most of the material themselves, and while the likes of Spencer's slide-guitar-laden "My Baby's Good to Me" could have come straight from the Elmore James catalog (no small compliment in itself), Green's sinuous, slow-burning "Looking for Somebody" creates a smoky mood all its own. An abundance of extra tracks and alternate takes on this version of the album gives Green and Spencer's stunning guitar gifts even more room to shine.
