While the specter of Joy Division loomed over nearly everything that came out of Factory Records in the years following the suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis, casting an equally impressive shadow was in-house producer Martin Hannett. Hannett's unique production aesthetic, which gave everything he touched a deeply majestic tone, was as much a defining part of the Joy Division (and subsequently Factory) sound as anything else .
