K's Choice includes: Gert Bettens, Sarah Bettens. This Belgian quintet follows up its critically acclaimed 1994 debut, THE GREAT SUBCONSCIOUS CLUB (recorded under the name The Choice), with a strong album chock full of eclectic, smart, melodic songs. PARADISE IN ME trades in some of the devastatingly witty irony of the band's earlier music for a more sober approach, which manifests itself in an underlying sense of melancholy (see the delicately sad "Catherine"). There is a palpable darkness here, as in the denial-heavy "Not An Addict," which also manages to be irresistibly catchy thanks to Sarah Bettens' hypnotic, resonant vocals and the edgy, urgent guitar work of Gert Bettens and Jan Van Sichem. This is folk-inspired music with an attitude. The songs have enough pop sensibility to be radio-friendly, but they also offer strange, quirky perspectives and unusual twists that make you stop and listen.
