Personnel: Matthew Sweet (vocals, guitar, 6- & 12-string basses); Ivan Julian (guitar); Greg Leisz (guitar, pedal steel guitar); Byron Berline (fiddle); Ron Pangborn (drums). Recorded at Sunset Sound Factory, Hollywood, California in January and February, 1993. Matthew Sweet has a great ability in being able to take a weighty list of influences and ingredients and make a good-quality blend of highly charged guitar-based pop. Anybody unfamiliar with his work, with a strong penchant for the electric Neil Young, the Raspberries, Gene Clark, Flamin' Groovies or Todd Rundgren will find this album utterly indispensable. Session men include guitarist Richard Lloyd, the brilliant fiddle player Byron Berline and the late Nicky Hopkins on piano. Sweet's work may be exclusively derivative but in the absence of the aforementioned artists, who else is there to carry the torch?
