Nonpoint: Elias Soriano (vocals); Andrew Goldman (guitar, background vocals); KB (bass); Robb Rivera (drums). Additional personnel: Grimm (vocals). Recorded at Elysian Studios, Boca Raton, Florida. Audio Mixer: Tom Lord-Alge. Recording information: Elysian Studios, Boca Raton, FL. Before you dismiss them as just another heavy rock band, take a close listen to Nonpoint's debut album STATEMENT. Sure, there are snarling vocals, pulsing basslines, pounding drums, and savage guitar riffs aplenty, but there's more to Nonpoint's sound than that. For one thing, their attack is tightly controlled with a razor-like precision that brings to mind the thinking man's metal of bands like Helmet. For another, the subtle rhythmic shifts with which Nonpoint varies its full-frontal assault points to a finely-nuanced understanding of counterpoint and compound tempos. The band's lyrics are several steps ahead of the usual hard rock pack, too, displaying a thematic sense and syntactical finesse that shows up lesser metal outfits for the brainless clods they are. Of course, you don't have to dig deeply into STATEMENT to get into its visceral, raging sound. But if you do, you won't come up empty-handed.
