IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT is where it all started for Pat Benatar. Her 1979 debut includes several tracks that automatically caught the ear of rock radio, and perfectly set up a recording career that by the mid-'80s would make her one of the top female rockers in the U.S. While other female-fronted rocker outfits such as Heart incorporated elements of Led Zeppelin into their sound, Benatar and her band went the opposite route and incorporated melodic pop into their hard rock. Such highlights as "Heartbreaker" and a cover of John Mellencamp's "I Need a Lover" have become arena rock standards over the years.
