Scritti Politti – Provision [CD]
Description
Originally released in 1998. Described by one of its creators as the "the most digital sounding analogue record ever made", the shimmering textures forged by Green Gartside and David Gamson were made by carefully recording each individual element on the record, before meticulously bringing the sounds together as one sculptural whole. This elemental approach has been subsequently adopted as the norm by forward-thinking producers like Daft Punk and their followers, but Gartside and Gamson conceived Provision without the computer technology that has made this way of working relatively straight forward. Provision was built piece-by-piece on tape. Yet what elements Scritti Politti had. Among them Roger Troutman, founder of the Zapp band brought his unique, cutting edge talkbox instrument to the sessions; Dan Huff (whose collaborations stretch from Kenny Rogers to Taylor Swift) added guitar; while Miles Davis helped the pair complete a track Green had started in his London flat. Bringing all these individual ingredients together was a Herculean task – Scritti Politti admit to 'enjoying' a tense relationship by the time the sessions concluded – but it led to a stunning record that even now, still sits ahead of its times.
