Personnel: Richie Havens (vocals, guitar); Paul Williams (acoustic guitar); Howard Collins (guitar); Paul Harris (acoustic & electric piano, organ); Harvey Brooks (bass); Bill LaVorgna (drums); Joe Price (tabla). Includes liner notes by Jerry Schoenbaum. Richie Havens's third album, his first for the Verve label, put him on the map in the world of progressive folk music. Though Havens strummed an acoustic guitar and sang out against social injustice, he was anything but a typical folk singer. Everything about him was unique, from his unorthodox, open-tuned guitar style to his singing, which combined a strong, Otis-like soul element with a plaintive troubadour style. While MIXED BAG contains strong original material like the evergreen "High Flying Bird," Havens's greatest strength is as an interpreter, a fact proven by his brilliant deconstructions of everything from "Eleanor Rigby" to "Just Like A Woman."
