Sammy Hagar: Sammy Hagar (guitar, background vocals); Gary Phil (guitar, background vocals); Jesse Harms (keyboards, background vocals); Bill Church (bass instrument, background vocals); David Lauser (drums, background vocals); Ted Templeman (percussion, background vocals). Although former Montrose frontman Sammy Hagar has been a solo artist since the late 1970s, the Red Rocker didn't have a major hit until '84, with the top-down, live-free-or-die VOA single "I Can't Drive 55." Bolstered by a flashy MTV video, the revved-up song became one of the most ubiquitous hard-rock tunes of that year. While the rest of the album is overshadowed by "55," VOA does feature a number of notable Hagar numbers, including the synth-laden power ballad "Two Sides of Love" and the raucous title track. Of course, Hagar's solo career would soon give way to his role as the frontman of Van Halen (or, as some would call the group, "Van Hagar"), with the raspy-voiced singer not venturing out on his own again until 1987's "I Never Said Goodbye."
