Album Overview

Talking Heads document the evolution of their early live sound on The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads, the group’s first live album. Originally released in 1982, the double album draws from performances recorded between 1977 and 1981, tracing the band’s transformation from the tightly wound new wave of its original quartet to the larger, rhythm-driven ensemble that followed Remain in Light.

The first record focuses on performances from 1977 through 1979, featuring David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, and Tina Weymouth on songs including “Psycho Killer,” “Pulled Up,” “Artists Only,” and “Memories Can’t Wait.” It also includes “A Clean Break” and “Love → Building on Fire,” capturing the lean, energetic sound of the band’s earliest years.

The second record moves into the expanded 1980–1981 touring lineup, with musicians including Adrian Belew, Bernie Worrell, Busta Jones, Steve Scales, Dolette McDonald, and Nona Hendryx helping transform songs such as “Houses in Motion,” “Life During Wartime,” “The Great Curve,” and “Crosseyed and Painless” into densely layered live performances.

This 2013 U.S. reissue presents the original 17-track double album on two 180-gram black vinyl records through Sire Records, with manufacturing and marketing by Rhino Entertainment.

Why You’ll Love It

If you enjoy hearing how Talking Heads transformed their studio recordings onstage, The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads captures two distinct phases of the band in one collection. The first LP showcases the nervous energy and stripped-down new wave of the original quartet, while the second expands into the funk, polyrhythms, and intricate ensemble playing of the Remain in Light era. This 180-gram pressing offers the original double-LP experience in a heavyweight vinyl edition.
