Album Overview
Talking Heads capture the evolution of their early live sound on The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads, the group’s first live album. Originally released in 1982, the double album draws from performances recorded between 1977 and 1981, tracing the band’s transformation from the tightly wound new wave of its original quartet to the larger, rhythm-driven ensemble that followed Remain in Light.
The first record focuses on David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, and Tina Weymouth during performances from 1977 and 1979, featuring songs including “Psycho Killer,” “Pulled Up,” “Artists Only,” and “Memories Can’t Wait.” The second record shifts to the expanded touring lineup of 1980 and 1981, where musicians including Adrian Belew, Bernie Worrell, Busta Jones, Steve Scales, Dolette McDonald, and Nona Hendryx helped push the band toward denser funk rhythms and intricate ensemble performances.
Across its 17 tracks, the album includes extended live versions of “Houses in Motion,” “Life During Wartime,” “The Great Curve,” “Crosseyed and Painless,” and “Take Me to the River,” presenting a snapshot of Talking Heads during one of the most transformative periods of their career.
This 2021 Start Your Ear Off Right edition presents the original double-LP configuration on opaque red vinyl. Released as part of Rhino’s annual SYEOR series, the pressing was limited to 4,500 copies.
