Album Overview
Talking Heads reached one of the most adventurous points of their career with Remain in Light, the band’s fourth studio album. Originally released in 1980, the record pushes new wave and art rock into dense layers of funk, polyrhythms, electronics, and globally influenced grooves, creating a sound unlike anything else in the group’s catalog.
The album opens with the relentless “Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)” before moving through “Crosseyed and Painless” and the sprawling “The Great Curve.” Side two includes the landmark “Once in a Lifetime” alongside “Houses in Motion,” “Seen and Not Seen,” “Listening Wind,” and the dark, atmospheric closer “The Overload.”
Produced by Brian Eno, Remain in Light was built from rhythmic jams developed by David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, and Tina Weymouth, with additional contributions from musicians including Adrian Belew, Jon Hassell, Nona Hendryx, and Robert Palmer. Basic tracks were recorded at Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, with vocals and additional recording completed at Sigma Sound in New York.
This 2006 remastered vinyl edition presents the complete eight-track studio album on 180-gram HQ vinyl through Sire Records and Rhino Vinyl.
