Album Overview
Talking Heads pushed their rhythmic and dance-oriented experimentation even further on Speaking in Tongues, the band’s fifth studio album. Originally released in 1983, the record combines new wave, art rock, funk, and electronic textures with some of the group’s most immediately recognizable songs.
The album opens with the explosive “Burning Down the House” and continues through favorites including “Girlfriend Is Better,” “Slippery People,” “Swamp,” and “Moon Rocks.” Closing track “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” became one of Talking Heads’ most enduring songs, pairing an unusually tender lyric with a looping, hypnotic arrangement.
Produced by Talking Heads, Speaking in Tongues features David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, and Tina Weymouth alongside additional musicians including Alex Weir, Wally Badarou, Bernie Worrell, Steve Scales, Nona Hendryx, Dolette MacDonald, and Shankar. The album builds on the rhythmic experimentation of the band’s earlier work while moving toward a warmer, funkier, and increasingly dance-oriented sound.
This 2024 U.S. repress presents the complete nine-track studio album on 180-gram black vinyl through Sire Records. The edition continues the heavyweight-vinyl reissue series previously issued under the same catalog number and UPC.
