Album Overview
Talking Heads pushed their rhythmic and dance-oriented experimentation even further on Speaking in Tongues, the band’s fifth studio album. Originally released in 1983, the record combines new wave, art rock, funk, and electronic textures with some of the group’s most immediately recognizable songs.
The album opens with the explosive “Burning Down the House” and continues through favorites including “Girlfriend Is Better,” “Slippery People,” “Swamp,” and “Moon Rocks.” Closing track “This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)” became one of Talking Heads’ most enduring songs, pairing an unusually tender lyric with a looping, hypnotic arrangement.
Recorded at Blank Tapes in New York and produced by Talking Heads, Speaking in Tongues features David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, and Tina Weymouth alongside an expanded group of musicians including Bernie Worrell, Nona Hendryx, Alex Weir, Steve Scales, and Wally Badarou.
This 1990 U.S. CD edition presents the complete nine-track studio album on Sire Records.
