Album Overview
Talking Heads introduced their distinctive mix of new wave, art rock, angular rhythms, and unconventional songwriting with Talking Heads: 77, the band’s debut studio album. Originally released in 1977, the record captures David Byrne, Chris Frantz, Jerry Harrison, and Tina Weymouth at the beginning of a career that would make Talking Heads one of the most innovative bands to emerge from New York’s CBGB scene.
The album features the enduring “Psycho Killer” alongside early favorites including “Pulled Up,” “The Book I Read,” “Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town,” and “Don’t Worry About the Government.” Byrne’s nervous vocal delivery and angular guitar work pair with the tightly controlled rhythm section of Weymouth and Frantz, while Harrison adds guitar, keyboards, and backing vocals to the band’s distinctive early sound.
Recorded at Sundragon Studios in New York City and produced by Tony Bongiovi, Lance Quinn, and Talking Heads, Talking Heads: 77 established the stripped-down arrangements, quirky songwriting, and rhythmic tension that would continue evolving throughout the band’s catalog.
This 2009 U.S. reissue presents the complete 11-track studio album on 180-gram black vinyl. The edition was mastered at AcousTech Mastering and issued through Sire Records and Rhino Records.
Why You’ll Love It
If you enjoy Talking Heads at their rawest and most tightly wound, Talking Heads: 77 is an essential starting point. From the instantly recognizable tension of “Psycho Killer” to the energetic “Pulled Up” and quirky charm of “Don’t Worry About the Government,” the album captures the group’s earliest sound before the increasingly rhythmic and experimental direction of their later work. This 180-gram pressing offers a heavyweight vinyl edition of their landmark debut.
