Album Overview
Talking Heads introduced their distinctive mix of new wave, art rock, angular rhythms, and unconventional songwriting with Talking Heads: 77, the band’s debut studio album. Originally released in 1977, the record captures the group at the beginning of its evolution from New York’s CBGB scene into one of the most innovative bands of its era.
The album features the enduring “Psycho Killer” alongside early favorites including “Pulled Up,” “The Book I Read,” “Uh-Oh, Love Comes to Town,” and “Don’t Worry About the Government.” David Byrne’s nervous vocal delivery and sharp guitar work are paired with the tightly controlled rhythm section of Tina Weymouth and Chris Frantz, while Jerry Harrison adds guitar and keyboards to the band’s distinctive sound.
Recorded at Sundragon Studios in New York City, Talking Heads: 77 was produced by Tony Bongiovi, Lance Quinn, and Talking Heads. Its stripped-down arrangements, twitchy rhythms, and offbeat songwriting established many of the ideas the band would continue expanding throughout its career.
This 1999 European CD edition presents the complete 11-track studio album on Sire Records.
Why You’ll Love It
If you enjoy Talking Heads at their rawest and most tightly wound, Talking Heads: 77 is an essential starting point. From the instantly recognizable tension of “Psycho Killer” to the energetic “Pulled Up” and quirky charm of “Don’t Worry About the Government,” the album captures the band’s earliest sound before the funk, electronic, and world-music experimentation of later releases.
