Tall Dwarfs: Chris Knox (vocals, recorder, organ, Mellotron, omnichord, maracas, loops); Alec Bathgate (guitars, electric guitar, background vocals). Though New Zealand duo the Tall Dwarfs began their career in 1981, their first full length album, FORK SONGS, wasn't released until 10 years later. It's a compelling mix of low-tech electronics, drum loops, and primitive guitar, set against a backdrop that's part Beatles on "We Bleed Love," and part Velvet Underground on the droning "Skirl," though the hushed ambience of "Thought Disorder" also suggests a passing acquaintance with the Young Marble Giants. Chris Knox's vocals blend the untutored charm of early Brian Eno with the knowingness of John Cale--the result is an unlikely combination of charming innocence and subtle menace. This release also contains the added bonus of the band's 1987 EP, DOGMA.
