The Beach Boys: Mike Love, Carl Wilson, Alan Jardine, Brian Wilson, Dennis Wilson (vocals). Recording information: 05/24/1966-07/14/1967. SMILEY SMILE was recorded in 1967 as a quick replacement for the unreleased SMILE LP, which had been scrapped at the last minute. This album lost the band surf and hot rod fans but endeared them to people who smoke funny cigarettes. Rumor has it that the band were so high they had to stay low, and record this album lying on the floor. SMILEY SMILE contains five songs that were to have been included on SMILE: "Good Vibrations," "Heroes & Villains," "Vegetables," "Wonderful," and "Wind Chimes." The versions recorded for here are less experimental. This album is now regarded as a classic, the record that Brian Wilson would never recover from. Different versions of "Cabinessence" and "Our Prayer," two more songs from SMILE, were used on the album 20-20, released in 1969. Two other SMILE songs, "Cool, Cool Water" and "Surf's Up," appeared on the albums SUNFLOWER (1970) and SURF'S UP (1971).
