X Clan emerged from Brooklyn, New York as one of the most distinctive and politically charged groups of the early 1990s. The original lineup, Anthony "Sugar Shaft" Hardin, Claude "Paradise" Gray, Jason "Brother J" Hunter, and Lumumba "Professor X" Carson, became the driving force behind the Blackwatch movement, a collective that also included artists such as Lin Que aka Isis and Queen Mother Rage. Renowned for their Afrocentric vision, militant activism, and unmistakable sonic identity, X Clan quickly rose to prominence. Their 1990 debut album To The East, Blackwards sparked both acclaim and controversy, reaching No. 11 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 97 on the Billboard 200. The record delivered several standout singles, including "Heed The Word Of The Brother" backed with "Raise The Flag", "Funkin' Lesson" backed with "Shaft's Big Score", "Grand Verbalizer, What Time Is It?", and the funk-driven, sample-heavy track "Verbal Milk". The group's original formation dissolved in 1995, and tragically, both Sugar Shaft and Professor X passed away later that year. To The East, Blackwards is now reissued on vinyl for the first time since 1991, honouring one of hip-hop's most influential and culturally resonant albums.
